Exotic pets are not "starter" animals. Rabbits and guinea pigs need spacious enclosures, specialist vets, and social interaction; reptiles need precise heat, UVB lighting, and humidity that mimic their native habitat.

Research species-specific lifespans and costs before adopting. A parrot may live 50 years; a tortoise even longer. The commitment outlasts the novelty — plan for decades, not weekends.

Find an exotics-competent veterinarian before you bring the animal home. Emergencies are scarier when no local clinic will see your species.

Habitat setup is the bulk of the work: correct substrate, temperature gradient, hiding places, and enrichment. Cutting corners causes stress, illness, and shortened lives.

Finally, adopt from rescues rather than impulse-buying. Many exotics are surrendered because owners underestimated their needs — let someone else's lesson become your preparation.
