Most dogs enter their senior years around age seven for large breeds and later for small ones. Aging brings slower metabolism, stiffer joints, and weaker senses.
Switch to a senior-formulated diet with controlled calories and added joint support (omega-3s, glucosamine). Monitor weight, since obesity worsens arthritis.
Keep moving, but gently: shorter, softer walks protect aging joints while preserving muscle and mental engagement. Swimming is excellent low-impact exercise.
Schedule veterinary checks every six months. Bloodwork catches kidney, liver, and thyroid changes early, when they are most treatable.
Adapt the home: orthopedic beds, night lights for fading vision, and non-slip rugs on slick floors. Patience and routine comfort an aging companion.
