Whiskers (vibrissae) are embedded deeper than ordinary fur, connected to muscles and rich nerve supplies. They detect tiny air currents and changes in surroundings.
This lets a cat "feel" a narrow gap, navigate in total darkness, and judge whether it can fit through an opening — all without seeing.
Whiskers also signal mood: pushed forward means curious or hunting; flattened back suggests fear or aggression.
Never trim a cat's whiskers. Doing so removes vital sensory input and can disorient and stress the animal.
